Nate Nastasi’s Eagle Scout Project

Congratulations to Nate Nastasi who completed his Eagle Scout project on Saturday October 18th in Southwest Resiliency Park in Hoboken. Scouts worked together to install three bat boxes and one bird house in the trees throughout the park. The project had a strong turnout of scouts, who, helped with contracting, installing, and securing, each box in place. Since the work was steady and organized, the installations were finished smoothly and will help local wildlife for years to come.

Scouts Read Names of Hoboken Servicemen

On May 17, the city of Hoboken rededicated the newly restored WW II Memorial. Scouts had the honor of reading aloud the names of the 161 servicemen from Hoboken who lost their lives in WW II.

Colin Jette’s Eagle Scout Project

Congratulations to Colin Jette who completed his Eagle Project on Sunday, March 23 at the community garden on 3rd and Jackson in Hoboken. Scouts helped clean up litter, removed weeds and tidied up the garden. The project was very successful and there was a great turnout. Scouts were able to fill up more than ten large bags with garbage and other debris.

Jayden Altamura’s Eagle Scout Ceremony

Venture Patrol Board Game Outing

On October 26 members of the Venture Patrol participated in a fun few rounds of the board game Diplomacy. It is a strategic game in which seven players each assume the role of one of the major European powers just prior to WWI. Unlike other games in the genre it encourages players to imagine themselves as international leaders and interact with each other more often to discuss “diplomacy” hence the name.

October Backpacking Trip

The group consisted of 5 scouts and 3 adults on our October backpacking trip at Harriman State Park. Scouts went on a 7.3 mile partial loop with lunch and a photo stop at the Lemon Squeezer. While there, they oriented their map using landmarks and checked their work with a compass for practice. The steady cook did a great job packing food that we had the smallest bear bag and least trash of any trip in recent memory. Although the fingerboard shelter there was occupied, scouts found a good camping spot complete with fire pit just down the hill. The hike back to the cars was 1.6 miles on a local road. The troop enjoyed breakfast at McDonald’s, and then headed back to Hoboken.

Noah Scheiman’s Eagle Scout Ceremony

Venture Patrol Trip to Northern Tier

From June 21st – June 30th the Venture Patrol traveled to the Atikokan Base at Northern Tier high adventure camp in Ontario, Canada (Atikokan is one of the three bases at Northern Tier). Scouts canoed across a section of wilderness called the Northern Crown Lands for a week. In addition scouts also had to plan the route that they would take to fulfill their 75 mile requirement. On trek they learned to properly unload and load the canoes with the special bags provided called ‘gray whales’ which were used to carry all of the food and equipment, learn to portage with the canoes across stretches of wilderness as well as what to do in situations where waves and white caps started to form. Each day the Venture Patrol was responsible for taking down or putting up bear bags, packing all of their equipment up every morning as well as setting it up in the evening and making sure to take care of their canoes so as to make sure nothing was damaged. In total the Venture Patrol exceeded the original 75 mile goal and ended up canoeing for 81.7 miles. This required them canoeing several hours a day.
